What this means is that, people can create their own version of operating system using the publicly open sourced code. On the other hand, Linux is created and maintained by a highly skilled developer community and is open-sourced. They are proprietary, non-free and closed sources. Windows and Mac OS are the products of giant tech-companies, Microsoft and Apple respectively.
